Lesson 9
Lesson 11

Memory verse: And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. Daniel 7:14 We made mention of the little horn coming up among the ten horns in our last lesson. Prophecy comes to light when you compare it with history and see what happened. We learned that three of these horns was plucked up. “I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.” Daniel 7:8 There were three barbarian kingdoms that perished out of Europe, The Heruli, The Vandals, and The Ostrogoths. All the other seven barbarian kingdoms accepted the Catholic faith, but these three would not. These were of the Arian faith and would not acknowledge the Roman church. The Roman Church ruled the government. History records that the Emperor of Constantinople at the instigation of the bishop of Rome, up rooted the Heruli in 493 A.D. The Vandals in 533 A.D. and the Ostrogoths from Rome in 538 A.D. It was an attempt to blot out true Christianity from the earth. We will look now at some of the identity of this little horn that came up and took out three of the horns. The little horn, remember is not a person but a system.

1. This fourth beast was different. -- How? Daniel 7:7 “After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, _________ and , ____________ __________ __________ and it had great _________ _________: it ____________ and brake in pieces and ____________ the residue with the feet of it: and it was ________ (different) from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.” It could not have been compared to any living creature. Rome was the fourth beast. Rome conquered the Grecians about 168 years before Christ came. They were in rule when Christ was born. Remember Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem to pay taxes to the decree of Caesar Augustus. The little horn power which came up among the ten horns (various nations of Roman territory). They are part of the fourth beast. The seven horns left would have connections to Rome and has some of the same characteristics. The only power that fits this criteria is The Roman Church as directed by the Papacy. It’s leadership was in Rome and was given temporal power by the rulers of Rome. The Papacy used the power of the Eastern Roman Empire to over come these three nations.

2. What would this little horn do? Daniel 7:21 “I beheld, and the same horn made _________ with the ___________, and prevailed against them;” It would make war with the saints of God. It was obviously a religious power. It would oppress God’s people. It attempted to combine church and state.

3. What else would it try to do? Daniel 7:25 “And he shall __________ great words __________ the _________ _________, and shall wear out the saints of the most high, and think to ________ _________ and _________: and they shall be given into his hand until a _________ and _________ and the ________ time. The little horn is described as speaking great things against God or blaspheming. How did they do that? In the fifth Lateran Council 1512 - 1517 A.D. It is said about the pope “Thou art another God on earth.” He is looked at as “in place of ‘THE SON OF GOD.” The Pope was also given the title “Vicar of Christ” or in place of Christ Jesus said in John 16:7, 14 When I go I will send you “The comforter or “The Holy Spirit, is God’s representative on earth, not some man.

4. Let’s look again at Daniel 7:25 “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall _______ __________ the ________ of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” There something else it would do? History is clear on this point. The Papacy resorted to civil forces to wipe out these they thought to be heretics. Millions were martyred. They were not the only ones who did persecution, but the characterization fits, because they did it in a much larger scale and it went on for many years.

5. Why would they try to change “times” and “laws”? DANIEL 7:25 “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to ___________ _______ and _________: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” This is not talking about changing man’s times and laws. This is done often, but this is talking about God’s time and God’s laws. Has “The Papacy” ever attempted to change any part of God’s divine laws? Yes. In two ways, Exodus 20:3-17 They eliminated the second commandment, which says that we are not to worship images or idols; then took the tenth commandment which is on coveting and split it making two commandments out of the tenth one. They used half of the tenth commandment, to replace the second commandment, and the other half they kept for the tenth commandment, so they could have Ten Commandments. They have also tampered with the fourth commandment and changed the observance of The Seventh-Day Sabbath (Saturday) to the first day of the week (Sunday). This was done in A.D. 336 at “The Council of Laodicea.

6. We are still in verse 25, How long would this persecuting power of the little horn have power over God’s people? Daniel 7:25 (last part) “...and they shall be given into his hand until a ________ and _______ and the __________ of time.”

7. In Numbers 14:34 how long does a year in prophecy equal? “After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each _______ for a ___________, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.” EZEKIEL 4:6 “And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee _________________ for a __________” Following scriptural principle that a day represents a year in Bible Prophecy. The word time can also mean year. This was common usage among the Jews and also other nations. This prophecy runs parallel with Revelation 12:14; 12:6; and also 11:2, 3. Look them up and read them. A time and times and dividing of times is equated with 42 months or 1260 days. It was predicted that the little horn would persecute God’s people.

Jewish time was 360 days for a year and 30 days for a month.

Time

360 days or years

Times =

360 X 2

720 days or years

Dividing of time

180 days or years

Total

1260 days or years

In A.D. 533 the Emperor Justinian issued a decree that declared “The Pope” the corrector of the heretics over all the church. In 538 A.D. The Pope exercised this right and went after the Ostrogoths and removed them from Rome. The Papacy retained this supremacy until 1793. Napoleon’s government decreed the papal influence to be reduced. The decree went into effect when Bertherir (A French General) captured “The Vatican” and imprisoned “The Pope” five years later in 1798. This put an end to the persecution of God’s people. It was exactly 1260 years from 538 A.D. to 1798 A.D. Date 1798 AD - 538 A.D. 1260 years

We will look more at time prophecy in another lesson. Go to your library there and see if you can find the book “Foxes Book of Martyers” it tells about what went on during all those years.

8. At the end of this time two things were to take place. what are they? Daniel 7:26 “But the judgment shall sit, and they shall _______ ________ his ____________, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.”

When "The Pope" was taken captive and put in prison.

      1. The power of The Papacy to persecute God’s people came to an end. God is in control. The power of The Papacy is broken.

      2. God's people freed from pursecution, and free to worship God again. Daniel speaks of God’s judgment here in verse 25.

9. Who will revive the kingdom after the other powers received God's judgment? Daniel 7:27 (Also read verses 13, 14) “And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the ____________ under the whole heaven, shall be _________ to the people of the __________ of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. “The next kingdom of this world will be cut out without hands and will be given to God's Saints.
